Subj:          Illumination Devices; lack of

1.                  The present Rules of Engagement in reference (a) require each Marine, at night, to challenge and illuminate for positive identification before chambering a round in his weapon.

2.                  Hand-held or individual use illumination devices available in this Battalion are critically short – about two per squad.  The use of alternate means of illumination such as mortars or artillery are not always practicable to use.

3.                  Appropriate relief is requested in the form of relaxation of the enforcement of the Rules of Engagement or a more abundant supply of hand illumination devices.
