Operational Participation and Results

 

1.         On 6 June a Battalion (-) (rein) search and clear of Tri Binh (1) village (GC 555985) was conducted.  No rounds were expended.  Of the 783 Vietnamese processed, 14 were turned over to Regiment as VCS.

2.         On 10 June the Battalion displaced from TAOR #1 to new battalion location N and NNW of the airfield.  Displacement completed on 12 June upon the arrival of Company A.  Because of command emphasis on establishment and improvement of defensive works, patrolling activities slowed down.

3.         A battalion (-) (rein) sweep on the island (GC 489094) on 14 June resulted in 16 VCS turned over to Regiment.  No shots were fired.  Many bunkers and fox holes were observed.

4.         On 24 June Company C (-) (rein) conducted a combat patrol in a portion of the extended TAOR.  Because of sniper fire along the planned route, it had to be shortened to finish before dark.  Artillery and mortar missions were fired in support of the patrol.  Received one incoming 60mm mortar round.  There were no confirmed enemy casualties.  Two Marine WIA’s.

5.         On 25 June Company A (-) (rein) conducted two day patrol on Ky Xuan Island (GC 489094).  No enemy contact was made and no shots were fired.  

6.         On 26 June a Battalion (-) (rein) search and clear operation was conducted on Hill 22 (GC 425091) of one day duration.  Air and Artillery fired in support.  No friendly or confirmed enemy KIA/WIA.  Popular Forces also conducted sweep of village (GC 429093) with Battalion in blocking positions.  Sniper fire was received during the day.

7.         On 28 June Company C (-) (rein) conducted a one day operation.  Air and artillery fired in support.  One Marine was WIA and two VC killed with unconfirmed wounded.  Twenty-two VCS turned over to Regiment.  Engineers destroyed caves and tunnels at GC 450050.

8.         On 30 June, 2d Platoon, Company B reinforced with Popular Forces Platoon and AmTracs started 36-hour operation on Ky Xuan Island (GC 489100).  AmTracs made recon patrol of waters adjacent to the island.  Two female VCS, captured.  Operation continued into the First day of July.
