Medical and Dental

 

A.                 The daily average number of patients seen in BAS was 13.2.  Of these, 30 were admitted to the BAS ward for further treatment and/or observation.  38 were referred to B-Med; 23 of these being admitted for further treatment.  Dental referrals numbered 53.

B.                 Prevalent and significant diseases encountered, wit the rate of incidence, are as follows:

1.     Bronchitis – 3

2.     Diarrhea, acute – 13

3.     Gonorrhea – 7

4.     Influenza – 1

5.     Pneumonia – 1

6.     Respiratory infection, acute – 7

7.     Urethritus, venereal – 2

8.     Heat cramps – 1

9.     Heat exhaustion – 3

C.                Emergency situations encountered and the treatment rendered are as follows:

1.     Ward, R. C., 2057287, PFC USMC evacuated to BAS via helicopter after suffering multiple shrapnel wounds of the lower extremities and left hand as a result of an exploding booby trap.  Treatment consisted of administration of Morphine, cleansing and debridement of wounds, administration of 200cc Dextrose and water and observation during the night.  The incident occurred on 6 September 1965.  WARD was referred to B-Med on 7 September 1965 for further treatment.

D.                The primary problem of the medical department continues to be medical resupply.  This problem has been partially countered by obtaining supplies for nearby organizations.  It is to be noted that serum and equipment for the administration of inoculations have been received and inoculations for the Battalion are being scheduled.

E.                 The total number of inoculations administered during the month of September 1965 was 1302.
