General Overview of all Activities by the 1st Battalion 4th Marine Regiment For the Month of October, 1969

 

On 1 October the 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division was fully operational with three Battalions deployed in the north central portion, south of the Demilitarized Zone in Quang Tri Province, Viet Nam.  The 1st Battalion was Assigned/Tasked with the Defense of Vandegrift Combat Base, and Signal Hill and for the Security of Route #9 from Vandegrift Combat Base north 3000 meters to the boundary between the 2nd and 1st Battalions.  ON 5 OCTOBER 1969 THE 1ST BATTALION DISENGAGED FROM COMBAT, STOOD DOWN FROM ITS TACTICAL COMMITMENT, AND DISPLACED TO QUANG TRI COMBAT BASE TO PREPARE FOR REDEPLOYMENT TO OKINAWA.

Delta Company, 1st Battalion was assigned to the Operational Control of 2nd Battalion 4th Marines to provide security for the 2nd Battalion, 2nd ARVN Regiment in order that the ARVN could devote full time to the dismantling and salvaging of material from Vandegrift Combat Base to be used in the construction of a new combat base to be constructed at Camp Carroll.  Delta Company remained at Vandegrift until relieved by a Platoon from Golf Company on 10 October.  On the 10th, Delta Company rejoined its parent unit at Quang Tri Combat Base and commenced preparation for redeployment.  On 22 October, the 1st Battalion 4th Marines embarked aboard ships at Cua Viet and sailed for Okinawa.  The Battalion arrived on Okinawa on 25 October and immediately commenced rehabilitation and training programs to satisfy the initial 30 day redeployment requirements outlined by the Division.
